ABSTRACT

The study investigated the impact of workplace diversity on organizational performance within Nigerian public institutions, particularly in revenue-generating agencies such as the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS). Although workplace diversity had been widely studied in private and multinational contexts, its specific impact on public sector agencies in Nigeria remained largely underexplored. The research aimed to bridge this knowledge gap by examining the role of gender, ethnic, age, educational, and religious diversity on PSIRS’s revenue collection efficiency. Workplace Diversity and Organizational Performance: A Study of Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS) served as the topic of the investigation. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires administered electronically via internal platforms and were supplemented with interviews and organizational records. The main instrument was a Likert-scale questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation analysis, multiple regression models, and diagnostic tests such as multicollinearity and normality tests, using SPSS version 26.0. The results showed that gender diversity, age diversity, and educational diversity had positive and significant impacts on revenue performance at PSIRS. Ethnic diversity had a positive but statistically insignificant influence, while religious diversity had a negative and significant effect on revenue performance. Specifically, a 1% increase in gender, age, and educational diversity improved revenue performance by 32.3%, 37.7%, and 36.2% respectively, whereas a 1% rise in religious diversity reduced performance by 15.2%. The study revealed that workplace diversity, when properly managed, enhanced organizational performance, particularly through the contributions of gender, age, and educational diversity. However, poorly managed religious diversity led to organizational inefficiencies. The study emphasized the importance of structured diversity management strategies within public institutions to optimize workforce productivity and improve revenue generation. It was recommended that PSIRS adopt structured diversity management policies, promote gender diversity, encourage collaboration across age groups, align educational qualifications with job roles, and develop effective strategies to manage religious diversity in order to enhance organizational performance and revenue efficiency.
