Effect of Students’ Mentorship Programs on Quality Supervision of Research Works in Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu (ESUT), Nigeria

Abstract

Research purpose:

The study examined the effect of students’ mentorship programs on quality supervision of research works in Enugu State University of Science and Technology Enugu (ESUT) Nigeria. The specific objectives are to: ascertain effect of one-on-one mentoring on quality supervision of research works and evaluate effect of electronic mentoring on quality supervision of research works.

Methodology:

The research design was descriptive survey method. Study Area was Enugu Nigeria. The sample size of 399 respondents was drawn from population of 1,603 academic staff of Enugu State University of Science and Technology Enugu. The study used structured questionnaire to obtain data. Research questions of the study were answered using mean score and standard deviation. The hypotheses were tested using single regression analysis.

Research Findings:

The empirical results show that one-on-one mentoring has significant effect on quality supervision of research works since mentorship program provides guidance, pragmatic advise and continuing support that will help the student to learn and develop (t – statistics (9.826) > P – value (0.000) and electronic mentoring has significant effect on quality supervision of research works since mentorship program provide sufficient advice on how to undertake research work more effectively and handle identified specific problems (t – statistics (5.908) > P – value (0.000).

Conclusion:

The study concludes that students’ mentorship programs have positive and significant effect on quality supervision of research works in Enugu State University of Science and Technology Enugu (ESUT) Nigeria.

Final recommendations:

Governing council of Enugu State University of Science and Technology should be regular capacity building on emerging online technologies through seminars and online platforms such as webinars, Digiface, and face-to-face workshop trainings. This could be realized through partnership with other stakeholders on research.
